What Are Virtual Members?
Understanding virtual members and how they work.
Overview
Virtual members are real WordPress user accounts that you create specifically to act as community participants. They are not bots — they are genuine WordPress users, just managed by you rather than real humans logging in.
When BuddyActivity publishes a scheduled post, it does so under that user's WordPress account. To BuddyBoss and your community members, the post looks identical to one typed manually.
Why use virtual members?
- Warm up new communities — seed a community with realistic activity before real members arrive
- Maintain consistent engagement — keep activity levels steady even during slow periods
- Run structured programs — simulate a cohort of students or participants in a course community
- Test your community setup — verify that groups, privacy, and notifications work correctly
The Member Library
BuddyActivity includes a Member Library (found under BuddyActivity → Member Library) where you can store and manage your virtual members. Each entry records:
- The member's WordPress User ID (used in your spreadsheet)
- The member's Display Name
- Their assigned Persona (writing style/voice)
- The Group IDs they belong to
Quick Tip
The Member Library acts as a central reference for your entire team, making it easy to find User IDs and remember which groups each virtual member belongs to.
